Pickleball in Healdsburg
In 2018, community members approached the City to ask about creating areas for a new sport called “Pickleball”. In response, and after a lively debate between tennis players and pickleball players at the City's Parks and Recreation Commission, we installed the first set of pickleball lines on one tennis court at Giorgi Park, making it a shared tennis-pickleball court. This effort was successful so the City added pickleball lines to the second court at Giorgi Park, and shortly after, staff installed temporary pickleball lines on the floor of the Multi-Purpose Room at the Community Center and purchased a moveable pickleball net for indoor play during the winter months.
Recognizing continued growth in the sport, the City worked with the pickleball community to develop plans for dedicated courts. The outcome of this work was a collaborative project with Healdsburg Unified School District to convert two under-utilized sports courts at the Healdsburg High School tennis complex into four dedicated pickleball courts. These courts are used by the High School physical education classes during the school year, and when not in use by the School District, available to community member through a monitored use program during school hours, and open to the public when school is not in session.
Today, Healdsburg hosts a total of 19 pickleball courts in a variety of configurations:
